Jones Bros’ apprentice awarded ‘golden ticket’ in national awards nomination
A young trainee at leading civil engineering firm Jones Bros is in the running for a national apprenticeship award after being presented with a nomination in the form of a ‘golden ticket.’
Robert Geraint Fôn Williams, known as Geraint, received the special ticket by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) to inform him he had reached the finals of its Welsh Apprentice of the Year Awards 2016.
It comes just months after Geraint, an apprentice plant operator, was named ‘Most Promising Apprentice’ in the CECA (Constructing Excellence) Wales awards.
The 21-year-old will travel to London later this month for the awards ceremony, which celebrates the achievements of CITB apprentices.
Geraint, 22, who is in the second year of a two-year apprenticeship with Jones Bros, joined the company as an apprentice plant operator in March 2015. He had completed A Levels at his local college and decided to opt for an apprenticeship rather than university.
He applied for the Jones Bros plant operator apprenticeship because he wanted to learn on the job and gain formal qualifications. “Combining a great company with my interest in working on plant showed the potential to be the perfect apprenticeship for me and it is great to be honoured with an award,” said Geraint.
Managing director of Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK John Dielhof said: “We are very proud of Geraint’s achievements, which are extremely well-deserved.
“It’s terrific to be recognised by the CITB as Jones Bros has always placed a lot of emphasis on apprenticeships and training, as well as on-going nurturing and development of our staff.”
The awards ceremony will take place on October 27.
Founded in the 1950s and employing almost 350 people, Ruthin-based Jones Bros has grown significantly in the last decade. It is currently working on contracts in various sectors including the construction of waste management facilities, highways, flood and marine defence and renewable energy projects around the UK.
