CERN visit delivers £60k export growth for Trafford-based Torkington Engineers

Precision engineering company Torkington Engineers has secured thousands of pounds’ worth of business after visiting CERN in Switzerland.

The Trafford Park-based firm landed £60k worth of new orders thanks to its attendance on a Department for International Trade (DIT) market trip to the particle physics research centre back in February.

During the trade mission, which was set up with the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Torkington took advantage of appointments and wider networking opportunities and received enquiries from several departments at CERN.

The company said enquiries are still coming through on a regular basis.

The DIT’s regional director for the North West, Clive Drinkwater, said: “The dramatic increase in Torkington Engineers’ level of exporting since the visit to CERN shows the importance of such market visits.

“At the Department for International Trade we have a committed North West team that collaborates with colleagues in Switzerland and the SFTC to ensure our engineering firms can take advantage of the opportunities CERN offers.”

He continued: “To win business at CERN firms have to meet the highest scientific standards required. Torkington Engineers’ continued success is proof of its world-class innovation and quality.”

Torkington was founded in 1949 and manufactures Computer Numeric Control (CNC) and conventional machine parts and equipment for the oil and gas, chemicals, power generation, nuclear, water treatment and pharmaceutical industries.

Paul Hulse, business relationship manager at Torkington Engineers, commented: “DIT’s assistance allowed us to engage with CERN in ways we wouldn’t have otherwise been able to.

“We would recommend any company in the North West that is looking to start or increase their exports to contact the Department for International Trade.”
