Danish bakers Ole & Steen secure UK debut site in Westminster

The first UK outlet of bakery brand Ole & Steen is heading to London next year after the Danish bakers secured a site at St James’ Market.

Working with UK leisure property agency, Shelley Sandzer, the bakers have taken a 4,400 sq ft restaurant, which will be split over a ground floor and a basement, ahead of the grand opening in the first week of January 2017.

Featuring space for 120 covers, the design for the new restaurant will be carried out by Space Copenhagen and will be fitted out with a ‘clean’ black and copper exterior.

The brand, which was founded by Ole Kristoffersen and Steen Skallbaek, already has over 50 locations in their native Denmark, serving up freshly baked breads, stews, soups and sandwiches.

Alastair Gordon, UK Operations Director from Ole & Steen, said: “As this is Ole & Steen’s first restaurant and shop outside Denmark it was hugely important to secure a busy, central location. Shelley Sandzer presented us with the perfect site.

“We are glad to be in the company of other exciting operators and can’t wait to introduce our new brand both to the food-loving people of London and also to visitors from around the world.”

Leo Feldman at Shelley Sandzer, added: “The team at Ole & Steen wanted a landmark site for their international debut and we are thrilled to see them take this space.

“Their site is at the heart of a very quickly developing area, which has recently welcomed Veneta, the latest concept from the Salt Yard Group, as well as Anzu, a new concept from Tonkotsu, and Duck & Waffle’s second London site.”
