Young Dentists and Surgeons Forward to Grand Final

The heat is rising in two national competitions, one for dental students, the other for trainee surgeons, run by Britain’s oldest surgical Royal College, with the announcement of the winners of the London rounds. Claire Bayliss, was victorious in the Kings College London dental skills regional round, with Jack Gao winning the equivalent Surgical Skills heat, run by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh

The ground-breaking competitions, dental skills sponsored by Dentsply Sirona and surgical skills in association with Medtronic, sees final year students from across Britain demonstrate their skills in a series of challenges.

The surgical skills Grand Final will take place in Edinburgh on 18th February at which the top 19 finalists from across the UK will undertake a broad range of clinical procedures before determining who has the scalpel skills to become the overall UK winner.

The dentals skills Grand Final will also be held in Edinburgh on 30th March 2017 with top 16 finalists, from across the UK, battling it out to be crowned as champion.

28-year-old Claire was excited to win the London round and said:

“I feel very fortunate to have made it through the regional heats to the Grand Final. I feel like this experience has strengthened my confidence in crown preparation skills and my confidence in clinical skills in general. I enjoyed competing with my peers in a friendly and familiar environment. The task was to complete a crown preparation on a canine tooth within one hour and it was challenging. It required me to put both practical skills and clinical knowledge, taught to me by exceptionally experienced and skilful clinical demonstrators at Guys Dental Institute, into practice.”

“The dental skills competition really captures the students’ enthusiasm and drive and challenges them on a range of key clinical skills; competing against the best students in the country is a significant challenge,” said Mr Brian Nattress a member of Dental Council at the College and a Consultant Restorative Dentist in Leeds.

Convened by College council member Mr Roger Currie, a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Ayrshire, the surgical skills competition is now in its third year and aims to discover the most talented aspiring surgeons in the UK.

“The surgical skills competition is a unique opportunity for medical students with an interest in surgery to practice their skills and demonstrate their expertise” said Roger, “We hope that it will inspire the next generation of surgeons and place them in a unique position for their future career.”
