Government publishes Northern Powerhouse Schools Strategy
The Government has published its long-awaited Northern Powerhouse Schools Strategy today, a £70m programme due to increase capacity and raise standards in schools over three and a half years.
The report recognises key challenges faced by Northern schools, such as the recruitment and retention of teachers, leadership development and governance.
SCHOOLS NorthEast, which represents 1,250 schools from Saltburn to Berwick, said the report has a range of recommendations for the Department for Education to better support schools.
Mike Parker, SCHOOLS NorthEast director, said: “The Northern Powerhouse Schools Strategy lays the gauntlet down to the Government regarding the development and growth of school leadership, the pressing need to increase the quality and quantity of teaching professionals and growing capacity across the education system.
“What is lacking is the ‘what next’ element of how the Government will adapt and implement recommendations and invest the £70m earmarked for this work.”
