Café future for Sheffield’s Wharncliffe House

Sheffield’s coffee scene will have a new addition when Foundry Coffee Roasters opens its first city centre café in January 2017.

The family-owned business, based in Nether Edge and set up in 2012, has signed a 10-year lease on 3,483 sq ft in Wharncliffe House in the city’s business district.

It currently provides coffee brewing equipment and machinery, consultancy/training services and ethically sourced, speciality coffee beans online and this will be the first step for the company into Sheffield’s burgeoning café culture when they open in January 2017.

The Sheffield office of Knight Frank secured the lease of the ground floor, lower ground floor and basement of the building which occupies a prominent position on Bank Street to Foundry Coffee Roasters.

Lee Newell, coffee roaster and managing director at Foundry Coffee Roasters, said: “In the last five years we have built a business with a fantastic reputation for quality. We have collaborated with people who have been more focused on the brewing and service aspects of the business, and that allowed us to learn and help us to develop our quality standards and controls.

“We have also served our own coffee at events including Glasgow Coffee Festival and Cup North and spent time installing equipment and infrastructure into other people’s coffee shops, developing innovative solutions for all sorts of challenging scenarios.

“Now it’s time to push things forward and explore some new territory in our own café premises. This will be where we bring it all together - amazing coffee, tasty food, great service and all while making a positive contribution to the local community in many different ways.”

Wharncliffe House, which was built around 1885 as a town house for the Earl of Wharncliffe, has undergone a significant refurbishment programme by owners Mandale Group including a new roof. The front of the building is Grade II Listed while the upper floors have recently been converted to apartments.

Tom Swallow, senior surveyor at Knight Frank in Sheffield, which has marketed the building, said: “The pursuit of ever better coffee drinking experiences drives Foundry Coffee Roasters.

“The company has exciting plans and is asking its customers to drive its plans for Wharncliffe House. It will be exciting to see their café concept evolve up to the opening next year.”
