Local housebuilder teaches children about Hedgehog Highways

20 children from local school, Hoylandswaine Primary, visited David Wilson Homes’ St John’s Walk development in the village on Friday to help celebrate the opening of the new Hedgehog Highways and learn about protecting local wildlife. The highways are part of the housebuilder’s continuous efforts to support the areas in which it builds, and each child was given a toy hedgehog to help them remember importance of looking after their animal neighbours.

St John’s Walk marks the first of three David Wilson Homes sites set to install Hedgehog Highways, which allow the animals to move freely under fence posts and between gardens. Hedgehogs are declining in Britain, attributable to more secure fencing and walling, which reduce the amount of land available for them to roam safely in search of food, mates and nesting sites. David Wilson Homes has consequentially been working with the British Hedgehog Preservation society in implementing Hedgehog Highways across chosen developments.

Katy Cushing, Sales Adviser at St John’s Walk, commented:

“It is really important to educate children on the importance of wildlife and our local environment and it was great to have the class from Hoylandswaine Primary School visit our development to show them how we can protect the hedgehogs living near our homes. Hoylandswaine is a beautiful area and as with all all our developments, we want to preserve its wildlife.”

Laura Cole, Headteacher at Hoylandswaine Primary School, said:

“The children really enjoyed their visit to St Johns Walk, hearing about hedgehogs and how the Hedgehog Highways work to help protect them. They especially loved taking away their toy hedgehog, which acted as a great reminder of the day and the wildlife they learnt about.”

St John’s Walk is a beautiful countryside development situated in the rural village of Hoylandswaine, Barnsley, offering four and five bedroom homes starting from £359,995.
