Mostyn Estates talks history of the family at IoD dinner

Leading business figures from North Wales were given a history of the Mostyn family and its work in the region at the Institute of Directors (IoD) North Wales annual Christmas lunch.

Richard Thomas, land agent and company secretary of Mostyn Estates, was keynote speaker for the event, held at Llandudno’s St George’s Hotel.

His speech focused on the history of the Mostyn family, who have owned commercial, residential and agricultural land in Llandudno and Flintshire since the 14th century.

The lunch, held in partnership with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Cymru and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Cymru, is traditionally IoD North Wales’ final networking event of the year.

During the talk, Richard also highlighted the boost in footfall in Llandudno, where Mostyn Estates owns a large portion of land. He explained the success of North Wales tourist attractions such as Zipworld and Surf Snowdonia helped bring more visitors to the seaside town.

Marc Fletcher, also of Mostyn Estates, discussed the company’s present day investment policy of diversifying the property portfolio. He focused on a recently purchased business park on the Wirral and the improvements that had been made by the company’s proactive management.

Richard said: “We’re really pleased to have been invited to speak at the annual Christmas lunch so more businesses had the opportunity to learn about Mostyn Estates and the work we carry out in the region.

“As landowners in Flintshire and Llandudno it is in the company’s interest to support a thriving business community and we endeavour to work as closely as possible with other businesses.

“I also attended as a trustee of St David’s Hospice, which will be benefit from the kind donations made by delegates during the event.”

The total amount raised for the charity was £521.20.

Chair of IoD North Wales, and head of employment law at Chester-based solicitors Aaron & Partners, Helen Watson said: “Richard’s talk was both fascinating and entertaining, touching on many stories from the Mostyn’s five centuries of history.

“The Christmas lunch is always a must-attend for IoD North Wales members and this year was no different. It was a brilliant way to end another 12 months of effective networking at high-quality, informative events.

“We look forward to the New Year which is sure to bring more exciting opportunities for businesses around North Wales.”

The IoD is the longest-standing organisation to serve and support business leaders, with more than 100 years of service in raising professional standards.

You don’t need to be a company director to join the IoD. Senior managers are welcome from large public organisations to small family firms.
