Caulmert launches new CAD/BIM outsourcing service

A North Wales-based engineering, environmental and planning consultancy has launched a new CAD/BIM outsource service to assist the region’s construction industry.

Caulmert, which has offices in Bangor and St Asaph, has created a digital drafting and modelling (DDM) department to offer the service. Previously, the team have acted as an internal support service to the other disciplines within Caulmert, successfully delivering projects for the last eight years.

The service will also incorporate Building Information Modelling (BIM) to the level 2 standard, which, as of April this year, the government requires on all publicly-funded construction projects.

BIM allows designers and contractors to work together collaboratively to streamline processes and workflows to accurately model construction projects before work starts on site.

Caulmert is one of few consultants in North Wales that are already delivering projects to this standard.

Following on from the successful delivery of several BIM Level 2 projects, including the £9m Holyhead Primary School and the £5.1m Ysgol Glan Cegin building in Bangor, the company is seeking to support construction firms by outsourcing its expertise.

David Murray, an associate at Caulmert, said: “BIM helps clients to visualise the completed design before work starts on site.

“This has significantly reduced conflicts and changes during the construction phase. It has also improved productivity and overall project quality.

“The DDM team has worked on projects across our three disciplines: engineering, environmental, and planning. As a result, it has built up experience and skills in a diverse range of sectors and projects.

“We can support companies by providing anything from a simple concept stage sketch through to a fully collaborated construction stage 3D model and drawing package. We can also assist businesses seeking to make the jump from 2D CAD to 3D modelling.

“We have the capabilities and staff to integrate our CAD/BIM service within a company and act as an external department, or simply provide additional support when there is a tight deadline.”

Caulmert, which also has offices in Altrincham and Nottingham, has already been tasked with supporting a civil engineering firm.

David added: “We worked closely with our client to create complex earthworks models, cross sections, and cut and fill analysis.

“The works also included the 3D detailing of the below ground drainage and reinforced concrete foundations and retaining walls.

“This allowed us to fully co-ordinate the above and below ground structures and drainage with the rest of the design team.”

Founded in 2009, Caulmert is on track to meet an ambitious 15-year growth plan, which would see it employ 250 people by 2024.
