Residents celebrate Christmas card competition win

A colourful range of Christmas cards have been launched for sale to raise funds for specialist activities across Hull and East Riding care homes.

Four cards were chosen from over 150 entries submitted by residents in a competition run by Hull based Hica Group.

The selection pack of cards are now on sale in all 19 of the homes operated by the not for profit organisation.

Winners included Elaine Hatcher, Andrew Baker and Sheila Westwood, from Prospect House in Goole; Tim Costello and Lesley Cooks, from The Birches in Brigg; Keith Morris, from The Anchorage in Grimsby.

The card designs include a range of reindeer designs, traditional styles, glitter, Santa and snow men.

Judges from The Hica Group Shine Forum selected the best designs to be featured in the pack of cards, with all proceeds donated to the company’s Shine Fund.

Hica Group chief executive, Penni Brown, said: “The Christmas card competition attracted a lot of interest this year, and we had so many fantastic entries, which made judging the competition very difficult. Our final choices are outstanding and it is great to see the positive response and support from the staff, residents and visitors who are purchasing the cards.

“The residents and staff really enjoy getting into the festive spirit and creating the cards. It’s a great activity which brings everyone together at such an important time of the year. Not to mention it is an opportunity to fundraise for the Shine Fund.

“The Shine Fund has a fantastic impact on our residents, providing day trips, entertainment and enriching activities. We use it to purchase items like RemPods which help to ease the symptoms of dementia through familiar surroundings.”

The proceeds from the sale of the cards will be donated to the company’s Shine Fund, which is used to fund activities, tablet computers, trips and extra equipment which aids the treatment of the symptoms of dementia. The company recently used its Shine Fund to purchase two RemPods including a 1950s kitchen and a classic pub to provide new and effective ways to tackle the symptoms of dementia. The pods had such a positive impact on residents that the group now wants to add as many as possible to its collection.

The Hica Group operates a portfolio of 19 residential care homes, five of which are for people with a learning disability, along with two retirement villages. The company also runs a home care service providing approximately 11,500 hours of support and care from four regional offices in the North of England.
