Monarch shrugs off recent travails to be named world's most punctual low-cost airline
Luton-based carrier Monarch Airlines has been named as the world’s most punctual low-cost airline, fending off competition from domestic and international rivals just months after a last minute investment package secured its future.
The airline finished top of air travel intelligence company OAG’s low-cost airline Punctuality League for 2016, which ranks airline performance of on-time performance (OTP) from a database of more than 50m flight records.
With an average OTP performance of just over 85.67% last year, the UK airline narrowly outranked Brazilian budget carrier GOL Airlines which ranked second with 84.63% while KLM subsidiary, Transavia, closed out the top three with 83.98%.
Jet2 was the only other UK carrier to appear in the top 10, with its 82.64% OTP performance placing it in fourth place.
Andrew Swaffield, Chief Executive Officer at Monarch commented: “We are delighted to be recognised by OAG as the world’s most punctual low cost carrier in 2016 because we know how important punctuality is for our customers.
“I would like to thank all the Monarch crews, engineers and support staff who worked so hard to help us achieve this recognition. I’m immensely proud of their dedication to our customers.”
The success comes after a challenging year for the London Luton-based airline where it received an eleventh hour £165m investment package from majority shareholder Greybull Capital back in October.
