Marketing materials company mda to create 90 jobs with Wigan logistics centre

Promotional merchandise company mda has announced plans to create a raft of employment opportunities with a new logistics facility in Wigan.

The firm, which designs and distributes marketing materials for brands across Europe, will be based at the M6 Epic 110+ site on South Lancs Industrial Estate, Ashton-in-Makerfield.

The move will create 90 permanent positions over the next three years, along with up to 150 temporary posts during peak times.

mda’s 110,000 sq ft M6 Epic 110+ base will be its fifth UK warehouse.

The site represents a joint venture between financial services giant Legal & General and property developer db symmetry.

In addition to its warehouse space, the building comprises 10 level access doors and two drive-in doors, 22 trailer spaces, 122 car parking spaces and office facilities. Planning permission has also been secured for the addition of another 70,000 sq ft.

Work is underway on fitting out the building. It is forecast to be operational in early 2018.

Cllr David Molyneux, the deputy leader of Wigan Council, said the move is a major vote of confidence in Wigan, commenting: “We are delighted that a business of the calibre of mda has chosen Wigan borough as the location for their new logistics centre.

“This is a business that has a proven track-record of success and we are confident that their move into Ashton-in-Makerfield will be a fruitful and successful one for the company.”

He added: “This is another great example of large companies choosing our borough for their logistics operations. We have opportunities for investment, great connections, a prime location next to the M6 and the right attitude to help businesses succeed and expand.”

Wayne Chapman, the managing of mda, said: “We are thrilled to be opening our fifth base in Wigan.

“This is a major step forward for mda and will help us drive forward our ambitions for the business to expand and grow while continuing to provide excellent service to all our clients.”

He continued: “I would like to thank Wigan Council for their support in assisting our move into the borough. In our dealings with the council we have only encountered pro-activity, pragmatism and support.”

The company was established in 1987 in Blackpool and today forms part of FTSE 100 point-of-sale marketing materials multinational Bunzl plc.

mda’s existing North West footprint comprises two bases in Blackburn, including the 250,000 sq ft former Walker Steel building.
