Donation made in aid of life-changing surgery

A 27 year-old Biology graduate from Newcastle University has been gifted £1,000 towards a life-changing operation.

Melanie Hartshorn, who lives in Cramlington has a rare form of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which affects her connective tissue. The cash donation was made by Persimmon Homes North East through its Community Champions scheme.

The scheme is a national programme to help fund local good causes. Melanie will put the money towards her appeal, which was set-up to raise the £150,000 she so desperately needs for a lifesaving operation in the US.

Without surgery, Melanie will experience progressive deterioration of swallowing, digestion, confusion and breathing, which will result in paralysis and even death.

“I can’t thank Persimmon Homes enough for this very donation,” said Melanie. “It takes me one step closer to the £150,000 I so desperately need.

“We have many plans to raise further funds including a charity ball and auction on February 25th. Anything anyone can donate will make such a difference.”
