Tharsus targets robotics market with NETPark expansion

Blyth-based manufacturer Tharsus Group has opened a new office at the North East Technology Park (NETPark) in Sedgefield, County Durham.

Hoping to widen its access to the North East’s pool of engineering professionals, he electro-mechanical product developer will also use the site as a base to develop its robotic solutions.

As part of its Industrial Strategy, the government released a green paper earlier this week identifying smart energy technologies; robotics and AI and 5G mobile network technology, a field which Tharsus hopes to continue to expand in throughout 2017.

NETPark has grown to be an internationally-recognised location for science and technology companies in the UK and Tharsus CEO, Brian Palmer, is ‘delighted’ to have joined the site.

He explained: “This will make it easier for us to attract the best engineering talent to the Tharsus team so that we can continue to deliver game-changing robotic systems for our customers.

“The main focus for the new office is embedded firmware and developing our core knowledge in robotics, in line with our business strategy for 2017.”

Systems Manager Glenn Aitchison, who manages the new office, said: “Our new office space will allow us to take advantage of a wider available pool of talent from Durham, Newcastle, Sunderland and Teesside, and the surrounding areas.

“We’re hopeful that this will allow us to take on even more bright sparks and talented, high-calibre engineers in the coming months.”

Simon Goon, managing director of Business Durham, the economic development company for County Durham, commented: “We’re delighted that Tharsus is joining NETPark and has recognised that Durham is a fantastic place to do business. They will have access to a highly skilled supply chain within the county and we look forward to seeing them thrive in the next few years.”
