Meet the companies Tech City is backing to be the next generation of household tech names
This year’s cohort of 33 high growth businesses participating Tech City UK’s second Upscale programme have been revealed, featuring some of UK tech’s rising stars.
App-only challenger bank Monzo, ecommerce firm Poq, wireless charging firm Chargifi and music website Mixcloud are just some of the London-based names who will be taking part in this year’s programme and receive mentorship from tech luminaries including Martha Lane Fox, Brent Hoberman and FanDuel founder Lesley Eccles.
In total, capital firms make up 26 of the total cohort with a further seven non-London companies, which is the highest total yet, also invited to take part - including Liverpool’s Living Lens and Manchester’s Due Course.
Launched last year, companies in the Upscale programme will benefit from mentoring from some of the UK’s most successful tech entrepreneurs to help unlock further growth and potentially become household names in the UK and beyond.

Digital advertising and marketing: StoryStream
Digital entertainment: Mixcloud, Boiler Room
E-commerce and Marketplace: Wolf & Badger, Paddle, Urban Massage, Trouva
Edtech: Firefly Learning, Mastered, pi-top
Enterprise Software and Cloud Computing: Cronofy, GeoSpock, Grabyo, every LIFETechnologies
Internet of Things / Connected Devices: Chiaro, Bulb
Healthtech and biology: Echo, Live Better With
Saas: Poq, CharlieHR
Hardware and Devices: Blaze
Following today’s announcement, Gerard Grech, chief executive of Tech City UK, commented: “One of the objectives of Tech City UK is to accelerate the growth of the country’s digital and tech sector.

It’s also great to see so many regions and sectors represented in the cohort, demonstrating the great diversity this country has when it comes to digital technology, as highlighted by the Prime Minister in her recent industrial strategy announcement.”
