MAC Clinical Research to create 12 new jobs with £500k Barnsley expansion

MAC Clinical Research is opening a new site in Barnsley this month, after investing £500k to upgrade a former office space into a working environment suitable for clinical trials.

The neuroscience research company, which has sites in Manchester, Leeds, Blackpool, Cannock and Liverpool, says that moving to the 4,800 sq ft office space at Tankersley’s Wentworth Office Park will create 12 new jobs.

The firm specialises in clinical trials in therapeutic areas including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, eczema, psoriasis, central nervous system conditions and depression. As well as conducting the trials, MAC Clinical Research recruit volunteers to take part in them.

The research company has been supported by Enterprising Barnsley, the business development arm of Barnsley Council.

Chief executive officer of MAC Clinical Research, Dr Mark Dale, said: “The move into Barnsley is a natural expansion for us and will see us get more heavily involved in the South Yorkshire market. In the not too distant future, we’re looking to open up more research sites across Yorkshire.”

One of the first trials at the new Barnsley clinic is into osteoarthritis and will see the company work with doctors in the local community to identify suitable volunteers.

Dr Victoria Lynch, clinical research physician of the Barnsley clinic, said: “We are excited to be currently trialling a new pain medication for osteoarthritis of the knee involving patients aged between 50 to 75 years. Previous trials have shown very positive results and we are hopeful that patients will be interested to participate.”
