Wizz Air to create 36 new jobs as it opens first ever UK base at London Luton

European budget airline Wizz Air has announced it is to begin operating a UK base from London Luton Airport in the summer.

The carrier, which has its headquarters in Budapest, has said it will begin operating from its 28th base, and first in the UK, from 18 June after operating routes to and from the London airport for over 12 years.

Its new base will be serviced by a new Airbus A320 aircraft and will be joined by three new routes connecting London Luton to Tel Aviv, the Kosovan capital of Prishtina and Kutaisi in Georgia, bringing Wizz Air’s total number of routes from the airport to 42.

As part of the move, which cements the airline’s position as the second largest carrier at the airport, Wizz Air said it will also create 36 new jobs in the local area directly employed by the airline.

József Váradi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air, commented: “Today’s announcement once again underlines Wizz Air’s commitment to the UK. Our first Wizz Air flight from the UK took off from London Luton in 2004 and since then, we have carried over 35 million passengers on our low-fare UK routes.

“WIZZ is bringing direct connections and the lowest-fare opportunities to our customers in the UK to explore everything that the CEE region has to offer, whether visiting their friends and family, taking city breaks, exploring undiscovered countryside or sophisticated sea and ski resorts.

“By establishing base operations at London Luton, where WIZZ is already the second largest operator and an important supporter of local jobs with our business partners, we are also creating direct local jobs with one of Europe’s fastest-growing airlines for the first time.”
