Kier saves time with Rhino Load Deck

Kier Living has partnered with Actavo | Hire & Sales to provide access solutions for a £9.5m Magenta Living project creating 75 extra care homes in Ellesmere Port.

Actavo | Hire & Sales – a leading supplier of non-mechanical construction equipment – has specified, designed and provided onsite technical support for c.200m2 of Rhino Load Deck on site, saving time as well as reducing costs.

Kier Living construction specialists – who traditionally use birdcage scaffolding systems on their construction sites – deployed the Rhino Load Deck system as a safety platform for the traditional masonry structure. The Rhino Load Deck provided a means of access, as well as a fall prevention solution for bricklayers and masonry workers.

The £9.5m extra care scheme will provide a combination of 75 one and two-bedroomed extra care apartments for older people. The complex will enable residents to retain their independence while being supported by a professional team, with an emphasis on excellent quality, flexibility and individual choice.

Actavo branch manager, Steve Roscoe, who saw the opportunity to introduce Rhino Load Deck to Kier, says: “The system provides a safe way to work at height and is recognised as one of the most stable load decks and fall prevention solutions on the market, capable of supporting loads of up to 600kg per square metre.

“We advised Kier to move away from traditional methods and try something new and they’re now reaping the benefits. Our team provided technical services and onsite support to site managers where it was needed, thereby further reducing man hours and completion times for our customer,” he adds.

Paul Cook, project manager at Kier Living, says: “Traditional tube and fit scaffolding would have been hired for a longer period and, therefore, more expensive. We were unsure at first of the load bearing qualities of Rhino Load Deck, but were pleasantly surprised when it far outweighed other systems in its loading capacity per metre-squared. Using Actavo’s technical services was also an advantage, as it ensured that Rhino Load Deck was erected safely and quickly onsite for us - this will be our system of choice for future projects.”

Actavo introduced the Rhino Load Deck system almost 10 years ago, and it has since become one of its most popular scaffolding solutions. It provides free-standing, multi-level platforms suitable for working at heights of up to three metres.

The Rhino Load Deck’s robust, precision components fit together securely without using hand tools, and two workmen can fit up to 50m2 an hour, compared to the more labour-intensive traditional birdcage scaffolding. As a result, site managers can expect Rhino Load Deck to be fully operational six to ten times faster than other traditional scaffolding solutions available on the market.

The Rhino Load Deck technical service offers site managers an all-encompassing hire, installation and dismantle option, as well as support with access solutions that are available at the point of need. Actavo’s technical service uses a highly-skilled and experienced team, thereby reducing man hours and completion times.

Actavo | Hire & Sales offers the Rhino Load Deck system for both sale and hire. For customers who prefer to hire the Rhino Load Deck on a job-by-job basis, the company offers a full site survey and design service with transport and expert onsite assembly.
