Pitcher and Piano to open in Durham city centre

British pub operator Marston’s has revealed it will open a new Pitcher and Piano venue in Durham, building on the success of its popular Newcastle quayside venue in the region.

The bar and restaurant, which will make up part of Durham city centre’s leisure regeneration at Milburngate, will be set over two storeys with construction beginning in late 2017, opening 2019.

Site developers are currently in talks with a number of operators to bring a high selection of quality bars and restaurants to the area.

Leading to the creation of a reported 1,000 new jobs, Milburngate is being developed by Carillion, Arlington Real Estate and Richardsons Capital LLP.

Steve Roberts, head of acquisitions for Marston’s said, “We are always looking for opportunities, which create a unique experience for our customers in fantastic settings. Milburngate is an exciting step for us and it’s great to be part of this development of Durham City’s riverside.”

Neil McMillan, Managing Director of Arlington Real Estate, said: “Pitcher & Piano is an iconic name in the leisure industry, particularly in the North East where its restaurant and bar in Newcastle really set the tone for the quality of the regeneration of the Quayside.

“As an anchor tenant at Milburngate, Pitcher & Piano, alongside the Everyman Cinema, demonstrates our ambitions to enhance the leisure offering in Durham City and enhance its position as a regional destination to live, work and play.”

Ben Holmes, Director, Real Estate at Richardsons Capital LLP, said: “We are proud to have reached this agreement with Marston’s as Pitcher & Piano is a perfect example of the quality of premium brands we are attracting to Milburngate.

“It will certainly increase the diversity and add value to Durham’s leisure economy while creating important employment in the city centre.”
