Bow's Charitable Book Exchange to Mark 20th Anniversary of World Book Day

Pupils at Bow, Durham School are exchanging books all for a charitable cause.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of World Book Day, Bow, Durham School pupils will bring in their unwanted books to raise money for Book Aid International.

Year groups 1-6 will bring in their previously loved books and during break times the pre-loved book can be bought by another pupil wanting to give it a new home. The fee of 50p per purchase will be donated to Book Aid International.

Book Aid International, is a charity dedicated to changing lives through books. Every year they send half a million books to community, public, school and academic libraries in 12 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, to increase access to the best quality books in some of the poorest areas of the world.

Mrs Sally Harrod, Head of Bow said, “We thought this was a great way of utilising families unwanted books. All the children have enjoyed bringing in their old books and were excited to take their 50p and come back with a ‘brand new’ book.

“This is a way we can encourage our pupils to read new books that they might not have seen before. Every child leaves school at the end of the day with a “new book” and the money raised goes to such a good cause.”

Bow, Durham School pupils will also have the option of dressing up as a character from a book and winning a prize for best costume. Photographs of all pupils and staff in their costumes, holding their favourite book will make a new display for the school library.

And, for 30 minutes on the morning of World Book day pupils will take part in a ‘Whole School Read’ where every pupil reads their favourite book.

“Reading for pleasure is something we encourage especially at Bow but also in the senior school, Mrs Harrod added.

“With the help of events such as these, our pupils are committed and enthusiastic readers.”
