Daniel Levy drops biggest hint yet that Tottenham Hotspur could remain at White Hart Lane for another year

Tottenham Hotspur Chairman, Daniel Levy, has dropped his biggest hint yet that the Premier League club could remain at their historic White Hart Lane home for another season.

The club are currently developing their new 61,000-seater stadium just yards away from their current ground, and looked set to move to Wembley for a year from this summer after Brent Council granted an application by the national stadium for more games to be held there over the next 18 months.

However, with their potential last-ever game at White Hart Lane against Manchester United just months away, Levy has suggested that the club is still keeping options open about when Spurs would say farewell to their current North London ground.

At a meeting of the Tottenham Hotspurs’ Supporters Trust at the end of February, Levy was quizzed about an exact timeline for the Premier League club’s move to Wembley.

Ruling out a two season stay at Wembley, Levy suggested that the club had contingency plans in place to remain at White Hart Lane for the 2017/18 season if construction of their new stadium was held up.

The transcript reported by the Trust states: “DL explained there are a number of factors associated with the move adding that once the Board takes the final decision to move away for one season everything ‘must be right’. That decision will mean the demolition of White Hart Lane so there is no margin for error.

“DL said the move was like a jigsaw with a number of pieces needing to come together (construction timetable/ public sector works/stadium financing). DL said the decision will be taken as late as possible so as to minimise the chances of making the wrong call.”

Also revealed at the meeting was that the current cost of construction work for Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium now stood at around £800m, almost double initial estimates and around £50m more than the £750m that has been touted in the media in recent months.

Levy also said that the hunt is still on for a new stadium sponsor and that a deal was more likely to be completed nearer the project’s completion, with names such as Uber and Nike rumoured to have been interested in the past.
