Travelodge begins construction on its largest-ever new build in the City of London

Budget hotel chain Travelodge has confirmed that construction has begun on its new 395-bed hotel in the City of London as part of its UK-wide £125m investment drive.

The hotel operator said that work on the property on Middlesex Street, which is backed by Freshwater Group, is now underway ahead of its opening in 2018.

Sitting a stone’s throw from the Gherkin, the new property will be Travelodge’s flagship UK hotel and will open on the back of 15 new openings across the country this year, following Chief Executive, Peter Gowers’ unveiling of the firm’s nine-figure investment drive.

As a result of Travelodge’s expansion plans, which will see new sites opening in Brent Cross, Bromley, Romford, Wood Green and Harrow along with ten more hotels across the country, the firm said it hopes to create 325 new jobs and grow its portfolio to 558 hotels in the UK, Ireland and Spain.

Peter Gowers, Travelodge Chief Executive commented: “The march of the low-cost hotel sector continues, fuelled by businesses looking to reduce travel costs and the new generation of independent leisure travellers.

“To meet the growing demand, we are adding further capacity in key cities and expanding to new markets. The start of construction on our new flagship 395 room hotel in the heart of the City of London is another milestone for our growth.

“Together with the 15 new hotels we expect to open this year, this will continue the ongoing transformation of Travelodge into a high quality, low-cost brand for both business and leisure.”
