Upgrade complete to vital health screening unit
A BOLDON company has helped complete the vital upgrade to a critical unit at one of the region’s largest hospitals.
Specialists Opus Building Services won the £450K contract to provide key building services for the refurbishment at the Bowel Screening Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead working with contractors AJ Bennett on behalf of NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust.
While wards 1 and 2 at the QE were vacated during the refurbishment, the works were carefully planned with clinical staff to ensure other adjacent ward areas were kept fully operational to avoid any disruption to patient care and other critical services.
Managing Director Gavin Richardson commented; “Opus Building Services are go-to specialists in the health sector and adept at managing complex and critical to life projects for health care institutions. We have experience working in every hospital in the north east and are one of only four companies in the UK on the NHS national framework portal.”
The firm, which has an impressive track record in the health sector from critical care installations such as high-dependency and intensive care units to modern office accommodation such as Regents Point at Gosforth, completed the installation of all mechanical and electrical services throughout the wards including stripping out of existing services.
Following the work to upgrade the Bowel Screening Unit, the South Tyneside firm have been awarded a subsequent contract to upgrade the former accident and emergency department at the hospital. A new £32m Emergency Care Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital was opened in 2015 so the previous A&E department is now undergoing a £700K renovation to provide improved Ambulatory Care & PIU (Pain Intensive Unit) provision.
Opus Building Services provide specialist electrical, heating and plumbing services across a range of sectors including; commercial and retail, healthcare, education, sports and leisure as well as industrial and manufacturing.
