Ex-forces Trainee Assistant Site Manager joins Barratt

Local housebuilder stands to attention as new ex-forces Trainee Assistant Site Manager joins Tarleton Locks squad

Michael Kearney, a veteran of the Iraq war, has been appointed as Trainee Assistant Site Manager at Barratt Manchester’s site at Tartleton Locks, as part of the five star housebuilder’s continual drive to provide employment opportunities for ex-service personnel.

The Liverpool-born new recruit joined the army on leaving school and was part of the Royal Engineers, serving within the armoured brigade in Iraq in 2003.

Since leaving the army, Michael has transitioned to working for Barratt, which has provided him with training including crane appreciation, a site manager’s course, fire coordination, C.A.T and Genny training, as well as entry to the Barratt academy and a NVQ 4 diploma in construction site supervision. Michael also receives mentoring from senior figures within the Barratt team.

Barratt Construction Directors say that many of the qualities they are looking for in its Trainee Assistant Site Managers fit the profile of people who have trained in the armed forces, including strong leadership and management skills, the ability to think outside the box, problem solve and work under pressure, whilst maintaining the very highest of standards.

Successful Site Managers are also required to be self-disciplined with excellent time management skills and a team player mentality – crucial attributes which the housebuilder says many former armed service personnel possess. Other key characteristics include strong leadership and management skills, as well as an ability to think outside the box, work under pressure and maintain the very highest of standards.

Commenting on his new role, Michael said: “I’m really grateful to Barratt for the opportunities it has provided and for the invaluable training which I have been able to undertake. I’ve really enjoyed jumping in feet first to this new role and I hope to be a part of the family here for a long time to come.

“The construction industry is a great arena in which to transfer from the forces to a secure close-to-home position, and I’d highly recommend it to any ex-service personnel looking to make this transition in their life.“

Tarleton Locks in Preston comprises three and four bedroom family homes, with prices starting at £212,995.
