Mace confirmed as main contractor on £140m Canadian High Commission project

Construction firm Mace has been awarded the contract for a £140m rebuild on the former site of the Canadian High Commission building.

The new No.1 Grosvenor Square development in Mayfair has been developed by Lodha UK and will entail the reconstruction and restoration of the historic Georgian building’s facade, which has been carefully dismantled brick-by-brick.

Demolition at the site is still ongoing and expected to complete in April, with Mace expected to begin construction on the building this Autumn ahead of its 2019 completion.

The site itself was previously occupied by the former US embassy between 1938 and 1960, before it moved to its current location in the London Chancery Building, making way for the Canadian High Commission before Lodha purchased the site in 2014 for £306m.

In quotes reported by Construction Enquirer, Pranav Goel, Co-Head of Lodha UK, said: “Mace has a very strong track record of delivering high quality, iconic developments in central London.

“No. 1 Grosvenor Square will be one of the most sought-after residential developments in the world and we look forward to working with Mace to deliver this exceptional scheme.”

Gareth Lewis, chief operating officer of construction at Mace, added: “Whether we’re refurbishing or converting older properties, including listed buildings, or delivering new build developments, we are committed to raising the quality of living both in the UK and abroad.

“We look forward to working closely with Lodha to bring their plans for No.1 Grosvenor Square to fruition.”

The development is the second of India and UK developer Lodha’s latest developments, joining its upmarket Lincoln Square scheme which is also set to open in 2019.
