University of Cumbria opens new clinical skill labs in Carlisle

The University of Cumbria has launched its revamped clinical skill laboratories in Carlisle.

The upgraded facilities were officially opened on Thursday (April 6) by the chair of Health Education England (North), Sally Cheshire, alongside the university’s vice chancellor Prof. Julie Mennell.

The university said the new environments will offer improved access to flexible learning spaces featuring high-quality technology-based simulation equipment, enabling users to reproduce various care settings and clinical scenarios.

Further, the facilities will give those studying occupational therapy, nursing, midwifery and other health-related subjects opportunities to develop their understanding of the practical side of caring for patients and clients.

Dr Louise Nelson, the head of nursing, health and professional practice, said: “The clinical skills spaces are ensuring that pre-registration nursing and midwifery students have a very realistic clinical experience.

“We try as far as possible to replicate the experiences the students have in practice, for example sourcing NHS beds, hoisting equipment etc.”

She added: “The students absolutely value the prescribed amount of time in the skills labs and feel very prepared for practice through the clinical simulation facilities. “

The university has another similar facility due to open at its campus in Lancaster on April 27.
