Tottenham Hotspur stadium update: Spurs eye increased capacity with new council application

The full capacity at Tottenham Hotspur’s new £750m stadium could be even greater than originally planned after it was revealed that the Premier League club submitted an application to Haringey Council to increase the number of seats at their new ground.

Plans had been in place for 61,461 seats at the new stadium, edging out bitter North London rivals Arsenal whose Emirates Stadiums currently holds the mantle for largest club ground in the capital at 60,432 seats.

However, the club have now requested an amendment to their original application to add another 98 seats to their planning application, bringing the potential full attendance at their new stadium to 61,559, in a letter unearthed by Football.London.

Citing ‘improvements in seating layout’ in their application, the club requested the amendments last month in a letter (which can be accessed here) signed by the project’s Head of Planning, Richard Serra, to Haringey Council.

It said: “As a result of improvements in the seating layout within the stadium bowl, the proposed maximum operational stadium capacity is proposed to be increased from the figure of 61,461 applied for to 61,559 – an increase of 98 or 0.16%. The available capacity for any given event will be a licensing issue depending upon the nature of the event taking place.”

The letter also outlined potential adjustments to the new ground’s roof, which would now be slightly higher on its inner edge due to ‘evolution of the stadium roof structure’.

The application comes to light as the club continues to remain tight-lipped on whether this season will prove to be their last at their historic White Hart Lane home.

Plans are already in place for a single season stint at Wembley for 2017/18 ahead of the anticipated 2018 completion date for the new ground, but the Spurs hierarchy, including Chairman Daniel Levy, have endeavoured to keep all options open until the construction deadline becomes clearer.
