Crossrail unveils Hatton Garden inspired ceiling at Farringdon station
Work at new Crossrail stations dotted across London has continued apace as the new Elizabeth Line gears up for its 2018 launch with Transport for London (TfL) showing off eye-catching ceiling designs at two key stations.
The images have been released as the ceiling construction at both Farringdon and Liverpool Street Elizabeth stations have been completed with both drawing on the locality for their inspiration.
At Farringdon work has been completed on a 320 tonne structure featuring 100 interlocking diamond-shaped concrete sections drawing inspiration from the nearby Hatton Garden jewellery quarter which sits opposite the station.
The sections were precast by Evans Concrete in Alfreton, Derby, before being pieced together and set in place to create what Crossrail describe as a ‘cathedral-like’ entrance for those travelling to Elizabeth Line trains from the western ticket hall.
Over at Liverpool Street, work has completed on angled ceilings that draw inspiration from the pin-striped suits of nearby City workers, utilising concrete segments precast by Laing O’Rourke at their Steetley manufacturing facility.
Work on the 40-stop Elizabeth Line which runs West to East from Heathrow through Central London and on to Abbey Wood is continuing with the first services set to run on the line in December 2018.
