Cybercrime is hot topic at Yorkshire Business Market

Boston Spa-based Deans Computer Services (DCS) enjoyed a busy appearance as an exhibitor at the recent Yorkshire Business Market 2017 in Harrogate with a high volume of enquiries reflecting growing concerns about cyber security.

With a key theme focusing start-ups and micro business development, the event at Harrogate Pavilions attracted a substantial number of fledgling companies and many of them sought advice from DCS regarding threats to network, web and email applications. Delegates were particularly keen to discuss anti-virus, data encryption and secure back-up systems and learn more about common forms of cybercrime such as phishing and ransomware.

DCS marketing director, Suzie Cowling, said: “Yorkshire Business Market is an opportunity for companies in the region to promote their businesses and learn from each other. DCS certainly learned a great deal –we were struck by how much attention new businesses are now paying to the threat of cyber security. The issue used to be an afterthought for many start-ups, but cyber attacks are increasingly widespread, increasingly sophisticated and often debilitating for SMEs. Sourcing reliable protection against cybercrime is now as fundamental to any new business as a phone line or a broadband connection. Companies of all sizes need to be equipped with the necessary tools to protect themselves from every angle.”

The Yorkshire Business Market featured a wide range of exhibiting businesses and keynote speakers covering topics from social media to a growth strategy, including a sales and business development masterclass from Ruth Whiteley, known to many as a contestant in the 2015 series of The Apprentice TV show. The Yorkshire Business Market is now in its 12th year and plans are already taking shape for the 2018 event.
