Treske completes a hat-trick in the North East
Church furniture specialist Treske of Thirsk in North Yorkshire has just completed a hat-trick of prestigious contracts for churches in the North East.
Treske has designed, manufactured and supplied bespoke furniture for Newcastle Cathedral, St John the Baptist Church in Newcastle’s Grainger Street and St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Bridge Street, Sunderland.
Justin Bartlett, owner and managing director of Treske, commented: “The North East is home to some of the finest churches in Britain. We are privileged to be part of this rich heritage, providing brand-new furniture which both acknowledges the past and enhances the present.” Treske has played a significant role in the on-going refurbishment of Newcastle Cathedral. Mr Bartlett explained: “We were honoured to attend the recent Service of Dedication of Chairs at Newcastle Cathedral. It has been a privilege to design and make these 40 oak chairs especially for the cathedral and it was a delight to see our chairs in situ, looking very much at home in their new surroundings. “The blessing of the chairs is a continuation of our very happy five-year association with the cathedral. Altogether we have provided 140 folding chairs and hope to provide more as the cathedral seeks to make imaginative use of its interior space for concerts, films, dinners and fairs. “These are exciting times for Newcastle Cathedral and we are delighted to be helping with the transformation of the cathedral’s interior into a modern place of worship and an excellent venue for quality city centre events.” Meanwhile Treske has provided an elegant oak cabinet for St John the Baptist Church in Grainger Street. The cabinet, which is able to hold a number of altar cloths, has two fold down access panels at the front as well as two folding up above the cabinet.
The Rev Dr Nicholas Buxton, who is supervising the internal refurbishment of St John’s, commented: “The Treske cabinet is superb. I know the company from the furniture they provided for Ripon Cathedral, where I was curate before St John’s, and their work is consistently impressive. I had no hesitation in commissioning the cabinet and have been delighted with the result, delivered on time and within budget. We are very proud of our new cabinet, which epitomises the fresh and attractive new look we are seeking at St John’s.”
Finally Treske has designed and built a unique hand-carved wooden tabernacle for St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Bridge Street, Sunderland.
Marc Lyden-Smith of St Mary’s commented: “There has been a tremendously positive response to the tabernacle by the local Catholic community, many of whom have commented on the simple elegance and beauty of the design. The Mercy Chapel, which houses the tabernacle, is a peaceful place of prayer in the heart of busy city centre.”
