Revealed: Blow for West Ham United as Vodafone pull out of £20m naming deal

West Ham United’s turbulent first season at the London Stadium has taken another twist today after it was announced that Vodafone had decided to pull out of its stadium sponsorship deal after talks broke down.

The telecoms giant had looked poised to sign a six-year £20m deal that would have seen its brand name adorn West Ham’s home, but it has now been reported that the deal has collapsed.

It is believed that the decision has nothing to do with the HMRC investigation that saw dramatic raids on files and materials from West Ham last month, rather the two parties have merely failed to agree on terms.

The news comes after a similar deal with Indian giant Mahindra also broke down last year due to a difference in opinion over the value of the naming rights.

The Premier League club have had a troubled first season at the stadium after crowd trouble early in the year threatened to mar the club’s first season at their new ground while controversy over the costs related to making the stadium able to support football matches has led London Mayor Sadiq Khan to order an inquiry.
