Gisborough’s ‘green’ team named as best in business

Gisborough Hall has notched up another award for its ‘green’ credentials.

For the fourth year running, the luxury 4* hotel has won a Green Tourism Gold Award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme, the world’s largest sustainable certification programme of its kind. The awards encourage and enable people to make sustainable choices that reduce their environmental impact when travelling for business or for leisure purposes.

Gisborough Hall is also one of TripAdvisor’s ‘Green Leader’ award holders in recognition of its commitment to environmentally-friendly practices.

Staff at the Victorian hotel, on the outskirts of Guisborough, work to implement a range of procedures to continually reduce the hotel’s impact on the environment as much as it is able.

These include: LED lights throughout the Gisborough Hall site; recycling of all cardboard, paper, metal, plastics, glass and oil; composting of all garden waste; the use of a Biomass heating system which utilises waste wood instead of raw timber to reduce delivery miles; the reduction of food miles by sourcing produce locally; and planting native species and herbs for use in the kitchen within Gisborough Hall’s vast grounds.

Kim Yardley, Gisborough Hall’s general manager, said: “The team at Gisborough always strives to be as ‘green’ as we possibly can. I’m really pleased that we have been recognised again by the Green Tourism Business Scheme but we are continually adding to our eco-friendly measures. Our staff are always looking at new ways to reduce our environmental impact and it’s a credit to the likes of our house-keeping team, our maintenance team and our head chef, Jason Moore, who work hard to reduce waste, use local suppliers and recycle.

“Gisborough Hall is in one of the most stunning locations in the world, at the heart of the North York Moors, and close to the coast and the countryside. This is something we never take for granted and must always protect for future generations.”

In April, Gisborough Hall became a fully-independent hotel for the first time since it opened in 2002. In addition, in the same month an AA inspection rated Gisborough Hall as one of the top destinations in the North East and North Yorkshire. The hotel received its best inspection to date and was awarded the AA’s four ‘Silver Star’ rating for its overall quality and two AA Rosettes for its food. The silver stars mark Gisborough Hall out as being of superior quality and are one of the highest hotel accolades available in the UK.
