Burley Mumtrepreneur Makes BBC News as Startup Business Blooms
A Burley based working mum of 2 has featured on BBC News, having been approached as a case study business by Notonthehighstreet to tell her story as part of national activity to discuss the rise of female entrepreneurs.
Dani, 29, from Deluxe Blooms, started her own business just over a year ago and her BBC debut tells how she came to take the plunge and become her own boss.
She was approached by the BBC after NOTHS put her name forward as a case study to coincide with research they’ve been carrying out with Oxford Economics around the rise of the female entrepreneur. A total of 90% of NOTHS partners are women and thousands of women throughout the U.K. are stepping away from the traditional 9-5 job, in search of more flexibility and control of their working hours.
Dani’s the creative type who saw a gap in the market for high quality faux flowers and arrangements and after launching her own website, and most recently offering a wedding flower hire service, Dani became a partner with Notonthehighstreet.
She said: “With the changes in the business world, social media and online shopping available any time of day, it’s clear that mumtrepreneurs have seen the possibility of running their own business and having a job that helps them to be a mum first”.
“After I had my daughter Lauren (now 7) I suddenly realised how difficult it would be to get back into work. I took a year maternity leave, and decided not to go back to my old job, as I couldn’t work extra hours that were required. No problem, I said, I’ll get another job that suits my new life better, or so I thought. After working a variety of jobs, from part time, full time and even weekends, I began to see that nothing seemed financially viable and worse, it took away precious family time.”
It was then, after two years of struggling, that Dani decided to take matters into her own hands.
Whilst pregnant with her second child, Luca (now 2) she started to plan her new venture, Deluxe Blooms.
“I spent around 18 months creating a business plan and sourcing the very best faux flowers around, and working on some designs. It was actually a lot of fun, and I realised I had made the right decision. Why shouldn’t I have a job that I enjoy and that works around me and the family?”
Deluxe Blooms has grown from strength to strength. Creating everlasting floral designs for the home and now becoming a wedding florist in Yorkshire, after just a year, Dani has already established a profitable and growing company, which has changed her life and her family’s life for the better.
“I couldn’t be happier. I get to do the school run everyday and work hours that suit me. I’d encourage anyone struggling to juggle work and family to start their own business. I’m just sad I didn’t do this sooner.”
