General Election 2017: Former Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg loses Sheffield Hallam

Former Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has lost his seat to the Labour Party in Sheffield Hallam.

Clegg, who was the deputy prime minister in David Cameron’s coalition government, held the seat since 2005.

Labour MP Jared O’Mara got 21,881 votes, beating Clegg with a majority of 2,125.

Commenting on the defeat, Clegg said: “In my time in parliament, I have never shirked from political battles. I have never retreated from the political battlefield. I have always sought to stand by the liberal values I believe in.

“But I have, of course, encountered this evening something that many people have encountered before me tonight… you live by the sword, you die by the sword.”

In addition, the Liberal Democrat Greg Mulholland has also lost his seat in Leeds North West, which has been won by Labour MP Alex Sobel.
