County Durham dogs home receives financial help

An animal rescue centre in Coxhoe has been gifted £4,000 to help improve its facilities.

Stray Aid, which has helped save thousands of dogs over the last ten years, has received the funding from Persimmon Homes Durham.

Dedicated staff and volunteers at the site look after around 1,500 stray dogs each year. The charity also provides free veterinary care for the animals before finding them a new home, giving them a prosperous and exciting future.

Lee Henderson, assistant manager for Stray Aid, said: “This funding from Persimmon Homes Durham is invaluable to us and we can’t thank them enough. This will save the lives of so many dogs and cats.

“We’re raising £250,000 to buy up the original boarding kennels on the site we currently rent space in, which will go a long way to stabilising the charity. We feel that we need this to continue with the charity’s work, to give us a permanent home and to allow us to have a proper base for both our dogs and our volunteers.

“The funding from Persimmon Homes will be used to maintain and future-proof the charity, which was originally set-up to support Durham County Council and decrease the amount of strays being killed.”

Christine Cooper, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes Durham, said: “After visiting Stray Aid and seeing how hard they work, it was clear that they should receive our backing.

“The help they give to abandoned dogs and cats is nothing short of remarkable. We are proud to be supporting them and wish them well with future fundraising drives.”
