Name change for Northumberland tissue manufacturer

One of Northumberland’s largest employers has a new name following a decision by the Stockholm-based SCA Group to split into two independent listed companies.

The former SCA tissue mill in Prudhoe takes the name Essity after the official listing of the global hygiene and health company on the Swedish stock market. The forest products side of the business has retained the name SCA and is listed separately on Nasdaq Stockholm.

With more than 400 employees, Essity Prudhoe Mill is the sole UK manufacturing site for leading tissue brand Velvet, makes Tork and Cushelle products – and is the largest producer of own-brand toilet rolls for a number of major retailers. Other well-known Essity brands include Tena, Bodyform and Plenty.

Prudhoe Mill is an integrated site and houses the Unifibres recycling plant, two paper machines, seven converting lines and an international distribution centre that includes a fully automated warehouse.

Several major investments have been made in Prudhoe recently with the aim of reducing energy use and water consumption in line with the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.

Such work will be integral to Essity’s mission – which is to sustainably develop, produce, market and sell value-added products within the areas of hygiene and health.

Site manager George Placogiannakis said: “Though our name and logo will change, it is very much still business as usual. Prudhoe Mill continues to have a vital role to play in producing some of the UK’s leading hygiene products under the new name of Essity.

“The rebranding process started this week and changes to the mill’s flags and signage have already begun. This will see the SCA name phased out and replaced with new Essity branding over the next year or so.

“Rebranding is a great way to strengthen our focus on producing essential products that we know improve the health and wellbeing of people over the UK, and we will still be engaging with the local community via our charity committee, that supports good causes throughout the Tyne Valley.”
