Contract vacancies in the East Midlands rise 15% year-on-year

Demand for professional contractors in the East Midlands has increased by 15% year-on-year to May 2017 according to research from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo).

The data, provided by recruitment software company, Innovantage, revealed that in addition to the uplift in vacancies for contractors, permanent positions also experienced a rise of 9% during the same period. Demand for contract professionals rose significantly across a number of sectors including engineering and construction which enjoyed uplifts of 48% and 34% respectively.

Commenting on the data, Julie Selby, Membership Relations Manager at APSCo said:

“After a number of months of increased optimism in the East Midlands, demand for contractors has once again risen significantly. Much of this activity can be attributed to the engineering sector which has a strong heritage in the region. And with the recent announcement that the University of Nottingham will invest £200m to create six Beacons of Excellence to boost engineering research, generating 500 jobs in the process, strength in this sector shows no sign of abating.”

“The construction sector is also showing positive signs of strength in the region. According to the latest Purchase Managers’ Index (PMI) from Markit, a jump in housebuilding pushed UK construction to a 17 month high in May. Nottingham and the surrounding area is home to many large building firms which are capitalising on this boom in demand including North Midland Construction which has just announced a £100m contract with Seven Trent.”
