Proposed Alnwick retail outlets could bring over 90 new jobs to town, say developers

A public consultation will be held in Alnwick next week to explore a proposed scheme to bring new food and retail outlets to Willowburn.

Submitted by Northumberland Estates, the plans could bring over 90 new jobs to the southern edge of the town.

The business has contracted national planning and development consultancy Lichfields (formerly Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners ) to handle the planning process on its behalf.

Lichfields say the development could include a new neighbourhood foodstore of around 1,500 sqm, non-food retail units of up to 1,860 sqm and smaller units for either retail or food and drink use, totalling 240 sqm.

The company revealed it expects to be in a position to submit a planning application for the site, on land south of Greensfield Industrial Estate, in late summer 2017.

Jonathan Wallace, Senior Director and head of Lichfields’ Newcastle office, said: “This proposed development on the site at Willowburn Avenue will enhance customer choice in Alnwick and generate new job opportunities for local people.

“Many residents of Alnwick and the surrounding area travel much further afield to other town centres and retail parks and, as the population grows, there is a need to continue to improve facilities in the town to meet the needs of local residents.”

The public consultation event will take place at Alnwick Cricket Club, between 3pm-7pm on 13th July.
