Intrepid trio cycle 171-miles in a day for school pupils

Three brave fundraisers from Accrington uniform company, Simon Jersey, are enjoying a well-deserved rest after cycling 171-miles in just one day.

Kiel James, Jonathan Whittaker and Oliver Cooper raised more than £800 cycling from Leicestershire to North Yorkshire in aid of the David Ross Educational Trust (DRET).

The Trust operates 33 primary and secondary academies, giving more than 11,000 pupils access to world-class facilities and teaching. It was founded by entrepreneur David Ross to provide school children with a greater range of experiences and opportunities to enhance their education.

The money raised by Kiel, Jonathan and Oliver and the other cyclists who joined them on the Inspire Bike Ride will be used to pay for enrichment opportunities. These include art, sport, outward bound courses and a variety of cultural experiences.

Events include the recent DRET summer cup, also supported by Simon Jersey. Around 1,000 pupils came together for the annual sports day which was attended by legends such as Sir Steve Redgrave and Colin Jackson to inspire the children to achieve their sporting dreams.

Kiel James, Simon Jersey warehouse manager, said: “This was a real challenge as none of us were particularly keen cyclists – I didn’t even own a bike! We all trained hard and were incredibly proud to finish the course.

“DRET gives its pupils fantastic opportunities that allow them to find their talents and passions. We’re glad to have raised more money than we thought which will allow the Trust to offer even more inspirational experiences.”
