Courses to help young people prepare for work

SCHOOL leavers who are unsure which route to take after finishing their exams are being given the chance to learn vital pre-employment and personal development skills.

East Duham Business Service, working in partnership with Durham County Council’s DurhamWorks programme, are delivering the courses over the next few months.

The courses, which are open to anyone within the 16-24 age range but aimed specifically at those who have left school, will help participants with skills like CV preparation, interview practice and personal development in readiness for the workplace.

Support is also available for those who wish to gain an apprenticeship or employment.

Employment Adviser Simon Naisbett is running the programmes and says they’re a perfect chance for those young people who aren’t clear what they want to do come September to learn more about the attributes employers look for in recruits.

Simon said: We know there are many school leavers who just don’t know what they want to do next. They have the option of college, or things like apprenticeships, but maybe don’t know what’s best for them.

“These programmes are designed to equip them with personal development skills and help them gain a clearer idea of what they’d like to do next.

“But it’s not just school leavers who can benefit. The DurhamWorks project is aimed at 16-24-year-olds who aren’t yet in employment, education or training, so if you fall into the category it could be the ideal opportunity to learn some new skills which could put you in a stronger position to enter the workplace.
