Cripps advises on acquisition of Essex gadget recycling firm

Accrington-based Exertis UK has acquired a UK firm that specialises in recycling and repurposing the tonnes of damaged and unwanted gadgets and electronics that UK consumers discard every year.

MTR Group, which helps to extend the lifecycle of anything from smartphones to wearables and tablets, has been acquired by Exertis UK, in a deal which London-based law firm Cripps advised on.

The sale will see MTR incorporated into the UK technology distribution and service repair provider, which boasts offices in Accrington, Stoke, Burnley, Harlow amongst others, expanding the reach of its environmentally friendly disposal service for mobile devices.

Through its lifecycle solutions service, the firm works with manufacturers, insurance companies, mobile networks and retailers, to help extend the life of used mobiles and tablets.

Steven Healy, founder and director of MTR, commented: “I am confident that by becoming a part of the Exertis group, we will be able to achieve rapid growth and build on and improve the overall level of our customer service delivery.”

The sale itself was supported by Cripps led by partner Nigel Stanford with assistance from Helen Garner, Elliot Fry, Rhona Darbyshire, Helen Welsh and Aleks Wulff, with the team advising both firms on the sale of their shares and on future employment arrangements.

Following completion of the acquisition, Stanford commented: “MTR is a fantastic company and, having advised them previously on their commercial contracts, it was great to work with them again.

“This was a complex transaction with a tight timescale for delivery. It required expertise from a number of different specialisms within the firm and Cripps was able to offer this multidisciplinary support to deliver the deal on time.”
