Drive Dynamics Welcomes News Learner Divers Can Take Motorway Lessons
The owner of a West Yorkshire driving school – with more than 300 instructors nationwide – has welcomed news that learner divers will be able to take motorway lessons.
Following wide ranging consultation, Transport Secretary Chris Grayling made the announcement saying it would better prepare learners for independent driving.
However, the move, to be introduced next year, would be restricted to those learning to drive with an approved instructor in a dual control car.
Bev Midgley, who launched Drighlington-based Drive Dynamics 11 years ago, said: “I think it is excellent news for learners and for UK road safety.
“Motorway driving requires different skill sets and is a concern for both pupils and in particular parents when their children have successfully passed their tests.
“Driving on a motorway for the first time is a very daunting experience, but if that first time is with a skilled instructor, in a car with dual controls, then it will be far less intimidating.
“And, importantly for other drivers, they will be taught the dos and don’ts of motorway driving, ie not to tailgate or sit in the middle or outside lanes when not overtaking.
“In my view it will ultimately reduce accidents and is to be applauded.” .
