Manchester Airport enjoys its busiest day ever on passenger numbers up 12%
Manchester Airport has cemented its position as the UK’s third biggest airport with a bumper July that saw 3m people pass through its arrival and departure gates.
The figures mean the airport has now hit 27.2m passengers for its annual rolling total, representing a year-on-year increase of 12% as it also celebrated its busiest ever day in July.
The North West aviation hub also began its £1bn transformation programme last month which is set to increase capacity at Terminal 2 by 140% as it positions itself as ‘the UK’s other hub airport’.
Collette Roche, interim managing director of Manchester Airport, said: “We hope that the start of the £1bn works help build excitement among all of our passengers about the future of Manchester Airport, with the vast majority of the improvements being delivered as early as 2019.
“Furthermore, it was incredibly pleasing to see the acknowledgement from Government about the role Manchester Airport plays, and it being one of two key UK hubs, as it seeks to create a balanced and internationally competitive economy.”
Reflecting similar gains at Heathrow and Gatwick last month, Manchester Airport also saw cargo volumes jump by 21% with 12,059 tonnes passing through the airport last month.
Owners Manchester Airport Group also enjoyed similar growth in its other airports last month with Stansted and East Midlands Airport both posting a strong July as demand for air travel in the UK continues to boom.
