Factory handed over safely by Harris

Wakefield based construction company Harris has completed work constructing a substantial 65,000 sq ft factory extension for listed double glazing giant Safestyle UK. The £4.5 million project at the factory, which is located on Valley Road in Wombwell, Barnsley, involved the design and build of a substantial extension to the existing plant to consolidate its on-site manufacturing functions and create a vast unit complete with a mezzanine floor to accommodate break areas and office space. The factory has been equipped with a wide range of innovative technology including a state of the art new glass toughening furnace, a fully automated glazing line and a high-speed cutting table. Danny Mulqueen from Harris says: “This build has further enhanced our growing track record for the construction of production facilities within live working environments. We were able to add real value to the project by recommending a specific type of external cladding so we could use double size Kingspan panels, that were quick to install with a tower crane, and saved six weeks against the original construction programme. We also assumed responsibility, on behalf of Safestyle UK, for organising utilities connections and associated way lease agreements with the local authority, which meant commissioning of the plant was achieved earlier than anticipated. All in all it’s been a very satisfying project to work on over the last eight months.” Safestyle UK was at capacity at its existing premises, so the extension to its factory will enable them to meet future demand for its products as well as allowing the firm to further enhance the levels of quality and efficiency that they are renowned for. The company chose to use Harris due to the firm’s excellent track-record on similar large-scale schemes in the region. Safestyle UK is part of the Style Group, one of the country’s leading manufacturers and installers of PVCu windows and doors. Harris CM employs more than 50 people, and predominantly operates in the private sector delivering industrial, commercial, residential and retail schemes. The company has delivered consecutive year on year profitable growth since its formation eight years ago, and is forecasting exceeding its £50 million turnover target.
