Local housebuilder invests in future with 2017 Apprenticeship Programme

As part of its 2017 Apprenticeship Programme, Barratt Developments Yorkshire West, which includes both the Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes brands, has announced the recruitment of five new apprentices, with two new bricklayers and three joiners. The new recruits are the latest intake of apprentices to commence their construction careers with the housebuilder, as part of their prestigious apprenticeship scheme.

This year sees Ryan Taylor, 19, from Doncaster, begin work at Ashmeade Park in Pontefract as a bricklayer, with Elliott Sheard, 18 from Liversedge, Kirklees also joining as a bricklayer apprentice on the Oaklands development in Pontefract. Billy Nodder, 23 from Castleford, will be working at the St Oswald’s View development in Methley with George Stones, 17 from Batley, Kirklees and Will Ingleby, 19 from Drighlington in Leeds, joining St Andrew’s View in Morley, all as joiners. The apprentices will be attending Leeds Building College, Wakefield College and Kirklees College respectively, to learn the theory behind the practical experience they will gain on site.

The scheme builds on the appointment of five apprentices in 2016, with a total of 34 apprentices taken on over the past 10 years, displaying the company’s dedication to providing jobs and pathways into the construction industry. Barratt Developments’ programme offers vacancies for trade or commercial and technical apprentices, and offers applicants the opportunity to become experts in their chosen field of work.

Darren Johnson, Construction Director at Barratt Developments Yorkshire West, commented: “We are very pleased to be welcoming five new apprentices to our sites across West Yorkshire this year. We are always happy to be able to offer more young people the opportunity to develop important skills by undertaking our industry recognised scheme. Many of our senior team members started with us at Barratt as apprentices, so we are looking forward to watching our new apprentices develop and become integral members of our team for years to come.”

Barratt Developments’ Apprenticeship Programme has been recognised by industry bodies as the best of its kind in recent years including the CITB Apprenticeship Awards, the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers, and National Apprenticeship Service’s BT Macro Employer of the Year Award.
