Hadrian’s Tipi could return to Newcastle ‘within weeks’

Festive pop up bar Hadrian’s Tipi could return to Newcastle city centre ‘within weeks’, as part of wider regeneration plans to transform East Pilgrim Street.

Taras Properties, which owns the East Pilgrim Street regeneration area including the old Odeon cinema site, has agreed a short term lease with tipi owner Danieli Holdings.

Hoping to introduce a ‘Winter Wonderland’ theme to the city over the forthcoming festive period, Taras and Danieli have recently submitted a planning application to the council to press ahead with plans.

If the bid is successful, the development will create around 80 full-time and part-time jobs over the period until Taras proceeds with redevelopment plans.

Constructed in the early 1930s, the former home of the once popular Odeon cinema has stood empty since 2002 and was only demolished earlier this year.

Now forming part of of an overall city regeneration programme, which extends from Swan House roundabout up to Northumberland Street, leisure and retail proprietors are currently being sought to fill the space permanently.

Hadrian’s Tipi proved a seasonal favourite in Newcastle last winter, assuming space outside of Central Station where festive shoppers and visitors to the city could enjoy drinks and food over the Christmas period.

Neil Winch, Group Chief Executive of Danieli Holdings, explained: “We have identified the site of the former Odeon cinema on Pilgrim Street as a location and the site will be open seven days a week and serve breakfast between 8am, with alcoholic drinks served from 10am and stay open until 1am.”
