Beverley independent cinema has its sights set on UK film industry award

Independent six-screen venue, Parkway Cinema and Theatre at Beverley’s Flemingate centre has been shortlisted for the Cinema of the Year (24 screens and under) Award in this year’s Screen Awards.

The Screen Awards recognise both the people and the companies that are dedicated to connecting audiences with film. Celebrating much more than box office figures, the awards acknowledge the wide array of studios, companies, venues, teams and individuals involved in the British film industry.

Categories include distribution, exhibition, marketing, publicity and brand partnerships, with the judges looking for creativity and the innovators of each shortlist.

Presented by Screen International, the leading film industry resource covering the international film markets, the awards are split into over 20 categories including a nominations for some of the biggest names in the industry including 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate and The Walt Disney Company.

Graham Tait, Flemingate Centre Manager, said: “Parkway is a superb, innovative venue and a beacon for the very best of independent cinema. This recognition is richly deserved.

“We were very excited to work with the Parkway team to bring such a high-quality cinema and theatre to Beverley and we’ve been delighted it has been proven so successful.

“Parkway is a major asset for Beverley and has made a significant contribution to the success and growth of Flemingate, bringing audiences into the centre and driving footfall seven days a week.”

Parkway entertainment Company Ltd was founded in 1983 by Gerald Parkes and his wife Denise. The business has since grown, with cinemas in Cleethorpes and Louth in Lincolnshire; Barnsley in South Yorkshire; and at Beverley’s Flemingate centre.

The Beverley venue opened at the same time as the Flemingate centre in 2015 and has since proven to be a success. Presenting a range of screen releases from family blockbusters to adventure films, Parkway also hosts a wide range of “event cinema” bringing the best of live opera, ballet, theatre and other cultural events from around the world.

Award winners will be announced at a ceremony hosted by radio and television presenter Edith Bowman at Grange St Paul’s Hotel in London on November 30.
