Manchester roads to be ‘significantly’ improved in £15.5m overhaul

Roads across Manchester could be set for an overhaul as part of a multi-million pound investment programme.

Details of the proposed first wave of roads and pavements to benefit from the city’s £100m Highways Investment Programme have been revealed.

Manchester City Council’s Executive will be asked to greenlight a £15.5m programme that will see work carried out in each of the city’s wards over of the city in the coming months.

The authority said as much work as possible will be completed, subject to weather conditions, by Spring 2018.

Under the proposals, some of the worst roads in the city will be targeted, while other key routes will undergo preventative treatment to slow deterioration.

The programme will also repair damaged footways and drainage infrastructure.

The report containing details of the work was considered by Manchester City Council’s Neighbourhoods and Environment Scrutiny Committee on Wednesday (October 11) and will go before the Executive next week (October 18).

Cllr Angeliki Stogia, Executive Member for the Environment, said: “We know from listening to residents that one of their highest priorities, for now and for the long-term future, is better roads.”

“That’s why work will take place in all of the city’s wards during the first phase of the Highways Investment Programme.”

He continued: “We recognise that too many roads across Manchester are currently not in a good condition, which is why, despite the financial pressures the council continues to face, we are proposing work to significantly improve as many of our roads as possible over the next five years.”
