Paul Drechsler CBE, Teesside University
Business leader Paul Drechsler CBE has been officially installed as Teesside University’s new Chancellor.
Mr Drechsler was on campus during the University’s open day on Wednesday, meeting prospective students and their parents, before heading over to Rockcliffe Hall for a ceremony to be installed in to his new role.
He becomes the University’s third Chancellor, succeeding Lord Sawyer of Darlington, who had served in the post since 2005.
The Chancellor is the ceremonial figurehead of the institution and acts as an ambassador promoting the University on a regional, national and international level.
Mr Drechsler, who is President of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), began his career on Teesside, working for ICI for 10 years. He then held various senior positions, living in Brazil, the USA and the Netherlands, which concluded with five years as Chief Executive of one of ICI’s principal international businesses and as a Main Board Director.
Mr Drechsler is currently Chairman of Bibby Line Group and previously Chairman and Chief Executive of the privately-owned construction firm Wates Group. In 2015 he was honoured with a CBE for services to the construction industry.
“I am honoured to become Chancellor of Teesside University at such an exciting time,” said Mr Drechsler.
“The investment and ambition of the University is phenomenal and I am looking forward to working with Professor Paul Croney and his team to help Teesside become one of the world’s leading universities and build on its global reputation.
“It was a pleasure to be on campus and meet with prospective students who are at the start of their academic and professional journeys. I am sure that everybody studying at Teesside will enjoy a fantastic learning and student experience.”
Ken Wiper, BHP Law
A well-known Darlington solicitor with more than 45 years’ experience has joined a regional law firm to ensure his clients receive high quality advice into the future.
Ken Wiper is nearing retirement and has closed his practice, which specialised in civil litigation and personal injury cases.
However, rather than call the day on his career, clients will continue to benefit from his expertise as he has taken up a consultancy position with BHP Law, based at the firm’s Darlington office.
Mr Wiper started as a legal executive in 1970, qualified as a solicitor in 1989 and set up his own practice in 2007 after being a partner at Latimer Hinks for many years.
He said his clients had been informed about the change and had moved across to BHP Law with him.
He explained: “I am nearing retirement and then my legal executive left to take up a training contract so I had to decide whether to replace her, close or move.
“The most important factor for me was how best my clients’ needs would be served and my joining a well-established, local practice with a wide range of specialisms was the answer.
“Not all firms have the expertise that BHP Law offers. They will take over the work I have been doing and will continue to work with my clients until their matters are concluded, and beyond.”
Managing partner of BHP Law John Pratt said: “Ken’s clients were informed that they were obviously free to go to another firm but I am pleased to say that they have joined us, along with Ken.
“He advises a number of clients on farming and land matters, which is one of our specialisms, along with disputes and personal injury cases. There is a natural crossover between the work he was doing and the type of work we have so it’s a very good fit.
“We will endeavour to provide the same high quality, professional service that Ken provided within his own practice to his clients and look forward to working with them.”
Huw Arthur, bimstore
As part of Space Group, bimstore is strengthening its team with the appointment of Huw Arthur as a new Sales Manager to liaise and meet with product manufacturers to make them aware of BIM, and how it can benefit their business.
BIM objects contain information found in product data sheets, and their relevant technical details are added with details regarding dimensions and functionality so that designers can use them within a BIM project.
Huw, aged 25 completed a BA (Hons) in Business and Marketing in 2015 at Sheffield Hallam University which included a placement for a year with Karcher UK as a Product Management and Marketing Executive.
This experience led Huw to a role as a Technical Author for Riley Product Handling Ltd – a mechanical engineering business – where he produced all the technical literature and worked with large blue-chip clients to supply all spares, replacements and parts required.
Huw caught the sales-bug from his role at Karcher, and with the technical knowledge gained at Riley Product Handling, he was eager to combine the two areas, leading him to bimstore.
bimstore creates, distributes and hosts manufacturer approved BIM objects in all formats including Autodesk Revit, Archicad, Bentley and IFC. All content is created with the highest industry standards, and bimstore makes it easy to search, find and download the appropriate BIM objects for your project.
Commentating on his appointment, Huw said: “I’m keen to develop in my role and to help bimstore create an even bigger online BIM object library.
“I’m looking forward to working with manufacturers to develop their BIM strategies and content and to bring more companies onboard with bimstore.”
