Entrepreneur brings Hong Kong street food concept to Liverpool’s Albert Dock
The Liverpool entrepreneur behind a new street food concept is bringing his business to Albert Dock.
Puffle Waffle, which sells egg waffle cones filled with homemade flavours in a twist on the popular Hong Kong food-to-go, is setting up shop in the 152 sq ft former TIC building in Anchor Courtyard.
The company is the brainchild of Kenneth Cheung, who started out with trials of the concept at local food fairs but eventually decided to seek out his own premises.
He said: “To secure a location at Albert Dock is quite the dream. Here you are central to the city and all that it has to offer, from the world-class museums and attractions to the huge-scale events that happen on the waterfront throughout the year.
“It’s amazing being here and we can’t wait to introduce locals and visitors to the delights of a Puffle Waffle.”
Discussing his inspiration for the business, Kenneth said: “As a child growing up in Hong Kong, this was the everyday street food of choice – and it continues to be the top-selling street food there to this day.”
Puffle Waffle, he explained, uses an “age-old, traditional recipe” created by his late grandfather, who was a restaurateur in Hong Kong most of his life.
The launch forms part of a new strategic reinvention of Albert Dock’s retail and leisure offer, announced back in March and led by investor Aberdeen Asset Management.
Chris Wright, fund manager at Aberdeen Asset Management, commented: “When we launched our ambitious long-term vision for the iconic Albert Dock earlier this year, after acquiring the commercial spaces in 2016, we made it clear that it was our intention to bring the most interesting and exciting restaurant and retail brands to the Dock – and Puffle Waffle fits that brief 10-fold.
“Family-run, authentic, independent and unique to the city, Puffle Waffle will be a fantastic new addition to the Dock’s current offer and will no doubt delight our visitors.”
He added: “We look forward to working closely with Kenneth and his team as we welcome them to the growing Dock family.”
Puffle Waffle will open its doors at Albert Dock on Saturday (October 21).
